March 2017 Sports Card & Memorabilia Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/5/2017
This lot contains three great baseball items, including a Joe Cronin autographed 1939 World's Fair Laurel Card, a Jim Coates autographed Official AL Baseball, and a Don Mueller autographed Official NL Baseball with rare "Mandrake" inscription (the Mueller baseball contains a Tri-Star sticker hologram). The Joe Cronin item comes with a full JSA letter of authenticity - as the Laurel card came from the New York World's Fair in 1939, where an organization called the Academy of Sport sponsored clinics for kids. Joe Cronin volunteered his time to work with youngsters on the game's fundamentals. These laurel cards were presented to the student to certify attendance at the class, and each card was signed by the instructor. This is a rare piece of memorabilia from 1939. Coates pitched in Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees (1956, 1959–62), Washington Senators (1963), Cincinnati Reds (1963), and California Angels (1965–67) - he won two World Series with the Yankees and was also an All-Star. Don Mueller was a professional baseball player who played 12 MLB seasons from 1948 until 1959 mainly as an outfielder. The first 10 of those years were spent with the New York Giants, for whom he batted over .300 for three consecutive seasons (1953–55) and led the National League in hits (212) in 1954. He earned the nickname Mandrake the Magician for being adept at consistently putting the ball in play and delivering hits through the infield. His lifetime batting average was .296.
