This FDC, dated and postmarked February 29, 1988, depicts a Conestoga Wagon and is signed in black Sharpie by famous actor and cowboy Gene Autry. The autograph includes a JSA COA. Autry was an American performer who was first known as a singing cowboy on the radio, in movies, and on TV from the 1930s-1960s. Autry owned the LA/CA Angels Major League Baseball team from 1961 to 1997, and also owned TV and radio stations in CA. From the 1930s to 1950s, Autry appeared in 93 movies and more than 90 episodes of "The Gene Autry Show" on TV.
Autry was known for being the first to create a "straight-shooting" American hero on TV and in the movies and touched the lives of millions. Autry was one of the most important figures in country music history, considered to be one of the top figures in country music along with Jimmie Rodgers. His singing cowboy movies brought country music to a national audience. His most popular song was likely "Back in the Saddle Again", as well as some iconic Christmas holiday songs such as "Here Comes Santa Claus", which he wrote, "Frosty the Snowman", "An Old Fashioned Tree", and his biggest hit, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer".
Autry was elected into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is the only person to be awarded stars in all five categories on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (film, television, music, radio, and live performance). The town of Gene Autry, Oklahoma was named in his honor.
