1930's Boxing Champion Max Baer Signed Album Page (JSA COA). Max Baer was a flamboyant and powerful heavyweight boxer who held the world title from 1934 to 1935, famously defeating Primo Carnera with a barrage of knockdowns. Known for his devastating right hand, Baer compiled a record of 68 wins (51 by knockout) and 13 losses over a career spanning from 1929 to 1941. His legacy includes a dramatic win over Max Schmeling, a tragic bout with Frankie Campbell, and a colorful post-boxing life in film and television. Max Baer's life and boxing career were dramatized in the 2005 film Cinderella Man, directed by Ron Howard. While the movie centers on James J. Braddock’s underdog rise to the heavyweight title, Baer is portrayed as the intimidating reigning champion Braddock must defeat. The depiction of Baer as a brash and menacing figure sparked controversy, as many felt it misrepresented his true personality—he was known to be charismatic and good-natured outside the ring. Interestingly, Baer also played himself in the 1956 film The Harder They Fall, a boxing drama starring Humphrey Bogart. That role was semi-autobiographical and gave Baer a chance to reflect on the darker side of the sport, including the manipulation of fighters and the toll it took on their lives.
